NewsBevington talks Arctic issues at Montreal conference
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The International Polar Year Conference has seen more than 3,000 delegates from around the world descend upon Montreal and Western Arctic MP Dennis Bevington was among them. Bevington's work at the conference began on Sunday as he attended the standing committee of Arctic parliamentarians, something he's been a member of since becoming part of the official opposition. Bevington said one of the topics discussed during the meeting was Arctic governments. "We're looking at ways to strengthen the Arctic Council so that it can, perhaps in the future, even be a treaty organization where it has the ability to really direct traffic and direct issues in the Arctic." Even though the meeting involved countries based in the Arctic, it generated a lot of international attention from nations with interest in the North because of the potential opportunities it will provide once things open up. "The European Union is very interested. China, Korea, right around the world there's a great deal of interest." Bevington's time at the conference wrapped up on Tuesday. CJCD Mix 100 News More Local
