Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The case involving the Union of Northern Workers and some of its tenants has reached the floor of the Legislative Assembly.

Both Frame Lake MLA Wendy Bisaro and Yellowknife Centre MLA Robert Hawkins each took turns talking about the situation between the UNW and the tenants, who want safer access to the building where they live.

Hawkins equated the situation to cars being more important the safety of women and he said the entire episode is being fettered by process.

"We all know the UNW has long since been a champion and has a productive legacy for fighting for the rights of others; for what is good, what is fair,” he said. “But what I can't understand myself, why are they putting all that great history and legacy behind without building a partnership with their tenants over what really lies down to safe access."

Bisaro talked about the UNW's decision to appeal NWT rental officer Hal Logsdon's decision to open up access and said there are costs which have to be considered.

"Who foots the bill for court time? Who pays the judge? Should a minor matter such as a fence dispute have to go to court? Should it cost those involved so much time, money and distress?" she said.

Bisaro said issues like this should be avoided because people are intimidated by court proceedings.
