Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The discovery of two bodies in Hay River Thursday has now turned into a homicide investigation.

Hay River RCMP have officially arrested and charged 53-year-old Benedict Corrigal with two counts of first-degree murder in relation to the case and he has been in police custody since the bodies were found.

Police have also released the ages and genders of the victims, they are a 64-year-old male and a 48-year-old female and both were found at the Hay River high-rise complex on Capital Drive.

Sergeant Wes Heron of G Division RCMP said Corrigal will remain in custody until he makes a court appearance next month.

"His next court appearance is scheduled for territorial court in Hay River on July 3rd, 2012."

Heron also said it's still not known whether Corrigal admitted to the crime while in custody.
"As to what he said I don’t know, I won’t be able to comment on that, the charges were brought to Mr. Corrigal after he was brought into custody."

He added the major crimes unit has now taken over the investigation because of the nature of the crime, the NWT Coroner's Office is now also part of the investigation as well.
