Lachlan MacLean about to enter Asia as part of Mongol Rally

Thursday, August 2, 2012 - 1:52 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Lachlan MacLean is quickly making his way across Europe as he's wrapped up the first month of the Mongol Rally.

The rally began in Scotland with driving training for a couple of weeks, then a departure from just outside London, England and from there, he's been through much of western Europe, including the Czech Republic, Poland and Ukraine.

It's all in support of the NWT Literacy Council and their co-ordinator of youth and adult services, Katie Randall, said right now, he's playing the waiting game on the Caspian Sea shore.

“After Ukraine was a ferry across the Black Sea, which actually took a couple of days to get the ferry itself,” she said. “He ended up in Georgia and now he’s making his way toward the Caspian Sea into Azerbaijan.”

There have been some delays with visas and at some border crossings, but Randall said the big barrier has been languages.

“He sent us the Georgian alphabet that he’s trying to figure out and it’s not anywhere near what we’re used to seeing,” he said.

To date, MacLean has raised nearly $13,000, all of which will be doubled by his employer, BHP Billiton.
