City of YK happy with budget, mayor praises consistency
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Finance minister Michael Miltenberger called the 2012/2013 budget one of restoring fiscal balance to the NWT and that's how mayor Gord van Tighem saw it as well. His Worship was at the Legislative Assembly on Thursday for the presentation and for the most part he liked what he heard. He said it was good to hear about commitments in infrastructure made by the GNWT to communities big and small. "It was good for Yellowknife and the communities of the Northwest Territories to see that the longer term commitments that were made are carrying forward, so really [there are] no surprises in it and it looks like business as usual." Van Tighem said the projected surplus of $74 million is also good news as it means the NWT is one of the "have" jurisdictions right now. And there was another piece of news he liked. "We're looking at a significant increase in housing units, they're looking at a significant increase in projects and employees that will need a place to live, so we seem to be moving forward together." The GNWT plans on spending just over $1.4 billion in the next fiscal year. CJCD Mix 100 News
