International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Day this weekend
Yellowknife, N.W.T. -This Sunday is International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Day and the Yellowknife Association for Community Living has organized activities to mark the day.
The events leading up to Sunday started Friday with " Stop.Check.Be Sure! ", which offered free pregnancy tests in women's public washrooms and on Saturday Free Mocktails for Moms will be offered at a few pubs in city.
Coordinator Narine Margaryan listed where these cocktails will be offered.
"There will be free Mocktails at the Hot Shots Pub, The Ravens Pub and the Boston Pizza Sports Bar for the first 75 women who walk into the bar."
Margaryan explained why this day is so important for raising awareness.
"The prevention is the most important part if there is no alcohol consumption during the pregnancy then there will not be FASD. So that is why we take this initiative very seriously and we try everything, as much as possible, different initiative to engage as many people as we can in our community."
September 9th has been recognized as international FASD day since 1999 in an effort to draw more attention for an often misunderstood disability that affects peoples both mentally and physically.
