Yellowknife, NWT - A group of 16 Junior Canadian Rangers from around the NWT are in Yellowknife this week for some enhanced training.

The Rangers are part of the Junior Canadian Rangers - RCMP Youth Academy, which will see them take part in a series of activities similar to what officers training for the RCMP go through at the Depot facility in Regina.

The commanding officer of the Junior Canadian Rangers in the NWT, Captain Sharon Low, said they will be learning a mixture of skills “safe ATV operation, they are going to be learning map and compass. Some of the police skills that they are going to learn [are] they are going to have a police dog demonstration, they are going to learn about traffic stops,” she said.

This is the first time the academy has been held in the NWT and Low said the Rangers and RCMP had been talking about this since last Christmas.

"The RCMP wanted to reach out to the youth in the territories and because we already run the programs it was a perfect mix of the two national programs to be able to partner together," she said.

The Rangers have been in training since May 12 and everything wraps up on May 17 in the afternoon.
