ENR on-site as more bison carcasses found near Fort Providence

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - More bison carcasses have been found outside of Fort Providence.

A total of 23 have been found in various locations, including Caen Lake, along Highway 3 and near the Deh Cho Bridge construction site.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources are on-site and are disposing of the carcasses as per protocol

Their manager of public affairs and communications, Judy McLinton, says that includes burning them.

"What we’re doing is, treating the animals with a chemical sterilant, which is generally formaldehyde, tarping them to make sure the carcasses stay intact and that scavengers can't get at them. And then we have disposal crews that will go in and burn the carcasses as they move along."

It's not known if the bison suffered the same fate as those found at the Mills Lake site last week as tests haven't come back determining whether or not the animals died due to anthrax poisoning.

McLinton added what's bothering the department right now is the sheer amount of carcasses found so soon.

"That's an awful large number to find in one spot, like we did at Mills Lake."

One hundred and twenty-eight carcasses were found at Mills Lake and this new find brings the total to 151.
