True North CF18 to bring Canadiana to Yellowknife

Friday, July 13, 2012 - 5:00 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The CF18 demo team arrived in Yellowknife Thursday for the Air Show, and they brought with them the highlight of their show, the True North fighter jet.

The jet is painted to honour the 10 provinces and three territories and features snowflakes depicting each of the regions.

Captain Patrick Gobeil , the pilot of True North, explained how that's accomplished.

"Within the snowflakes, if you look from far away they look like snowflakes. But if you look into them you will see things like airplanes, they represent sovereignty patrols, you’ll have a look at northern culture and you see whales. There is a lot of beautiful designs all across the aircraft"

Cold Lake, Alberta's Jim Beliveau designed the mural, and will be in attendance.

Gobeil said it's going to be an impressive show.

"We are going to start with a dirty roll after takeoff, which shows obviously the power and the speed of the CF18. Lots of high speed passes, we can fly during the show up to .95 which is almost the speed of sound, which is 1.06, so 95% of the speed of sound"

The CF18 Hornet show will be short, packing all of the action into 14 minutes.
