Hay River prepares for homecoming next summer

Monday, July 30, 2012 - 1:28 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - A delegation of Hay River residents is organizing a 2013 Homecoming event in the town to mark many different milestones that take place next summer.

There will be many other events taking place at the beginning of July such as Hay Days and Canada Day celebrations.

Hay River mayor Ken Latour described the group that was inspired to create this new event for the town.

"There were some people who came to Hay River, people who had gone through the federal day school back in the 60's I believe, and they had staged a mini-reunion here and they thought it'd be good to have something bigger."

Latour talked about some of the many different town milestones that will be honoured during the homecoming.

"Diamond Jenness Secondary School turns 40 next year, it's also 50 years from the 1963 flood, and it's a bit of a milestone year too for I think when they closed Pine Point."

The process for planning the event has already begun and there is a Facebook page with more information.
