CWF gives YWCA Yellowknife funding for mentoring program
Yellowknife, N.W.T- The Canadian Women's Foundation has made the day of YWCA Yellowknife.
A grant of $248,000 over the next four years will be on its way from the CWF to help with the Y's GirlSpace afterschool program, specifically to help implement a group mentoring program.
The Y's director of child and youth services, Janette Morris, said the CWF approached them because they have a great chance to have mentoring take off due to the girls already being part of GirlSpace.
"In year one and year two of this funding help us learn and develop and find out what we need to know about mentoring, and what a good group mentoring program is."
In years three and four, Morris said she's hoping to have the mentoring fully in place.
In addition, she said they're hoping to keep the groups as small as possible to make sure the girls involved get a well-rounded experience.
“Around three girls to one mentor, and we will doing probably being doing probably monthly activities with the mentor, so we are looking for people of different career backgrounds."
Some of those career backgrounds include music, sports or arts.
