Harper Government Ignoring Northern Needs: Bevington
Yellowknife, NWT - The MP for the Western Arctic said the Harper Government refuses to listen to Northerners as it tables legislation dealing with the North.
Dennis Bevington referred to Bill C-47 which deals with land rights in the NWT and Bill C-45 which sparked all the Idle No More protests.
Bevington said groups like the NWT and Nunavut Chamber of Mines and Alternatives North have proposed amendments to Bill C-47.
"With the Chamber of Mines they wanted to ensure that there was grandfathering of changes to land use plans so that existing mines would not be responsible for changes that take place in land use plans after their mines are up and running."
Bevington said the Feds refusal to act on Northern recommendations doesn't bode well for a final devolution agreement.
"It's a very colonial attitude. It says, you know, we know what's right. We're putting this legislation in place. We're talking about devolution in a matter of months or years, and you're going to get this legislation the way we want it. And I think that's just really unfortunate."
Bevington said amendments put forth by the NDP include a review process and a rule that all board and commission meetings be public.
He said the government gave no reason for voting down those proposals.
