NewsNomination week starts for MLAsTuesday, September 6, 2011 - 8:14 AM Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Electoral offices across the territory are open for business ahead of the fall election. Chief Electoral Officer David Brock explained that the nomination period for aspiring MLAs to become official candidates runs until 2 p.m. Sept. 9. "That's the time during which individuals who want to be candidates may submit their nomination papers to be officially certified as candidates by their returning officer." To become official candidates, political hopefuls need to have a few things in their nomination packages, including 15 signatures of eligible voters and a $200 deposit. They will also need to choose an official agent - that person, Brock explained, is responsible for the candidate's expenses, contributions and the financial report after the election. And NWT residents have until Sept. 14 to make sure they're on the voters' list, or to update personal information, including a change of name or address. Voters go to the polls October 3rd. All current MLAs in Yellowknife said they are running again, while in the Hub, Jane Groenewegen said she will also go for another term as the MLA for Hay River South.
