Three acclaimed in NWT Oct. 3 election

Monday, September 12, 2011 - 7:24 AM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Three people in the NWT are getting a free ticket into the next Legislative Assembly.

The official candidates list has been released and shows Robert McLeod in Inuvik Twin Lakes, Tom Beaulieu in Tu Nedhe and Bob McLeod in Yellowknife South will be acclaimed.

The territory's Chief Electoral Officer, David Brock, said there's really no way to tell how many people will run in an election.

"We don't necessarily expect any particular number of candidates in any given election. One of the mottos that we've been using approaching the election, is that democracy needs candidates and that candidates coming forward are very good for the democratic system."

Brock explained that acclamations vary from term to term.

"It's not terribly uncommon in territorial elections," he said. "We had three acclamations this year, we had three acclamations in 2007, some may remember five acclamations in the 2003 general election, and there was only one back in 1999."

In Yellowknife, four people are running in the Kam Lake and Range Lake ridings; three are vying for the Frame Lake seat and two are running in each of the Weledeh, Great Slave, and Yellowknife Centre ridings.

With acclamations in three ridings, there will be voting in 16 of the territory's 19 districts.

Brock said people have until Sept. 14 to make sure they're on the voters' list for the Oct. 3 election.
