Peace officers honoured at annual memorial service

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - This past Sunday was a chance to remember those who have fallen in the line of duty.
The Yellowknife RCMP hosted the annual Police and Peace Officers National Memorial Day at the Henry Larsen Building to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep the public safe.
Commanding officer, Chief Superintendent Wade Blake, said the day was about more than just police officers.
"Its correctional officers, and its municipal enforcement officers, and you know, sheriffs. It's anybody that provides that peace officer role within a community."
This year’s service wasn't as well attended as they've been in the past, but Blake said people may not have known about the event.
"Maybe we didn't advertise it as much as it could've been. Maybe people in the public didn't totally understand that this wasn't just a police-based ceremony."
The ceremony takes place on the last Sunday of September across the country.
