NewsHay River also gearing up for New Year's EveFriday, December 30, 2011 - 2:45 PM Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The town of Hay River is getting into the New Year's Eve spirit. A number of events are being planned for Saturday night, including a small skating rink being set up to go along with the traditional bonfire and fireworks show. There is a new location this year as the festivities will be held at the Riverview Drive ice crossing and recreation programmer Emma Harper said there were a couple of reasons for the change. “There’s more space and opportunity at the new location for the bonfire and increased activities,” she said. “There was also a bit of a safety issue with residences in the area in the old location and this way, we’re a little further away from that.” Harper also said the skating rink is a new addition this year, as well as music being played for revellers throughout the evening, but it won't be live this time. “Maybe further down the line but this year, we’ll just have some recorded music played through a speaker,” she said. Harper plans on kicking things off around 10:30 p.m. with the starting of the bonfire with the fireworks set to go off at around midnight.
