Deputy mayor position in Hay River going to a vote
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Just who will be second on the chain of command in Hay River is still up in the air.
The situation was thought to have been settled earlier this month when councillor Andrew Cassidy had put his name forward as an interested candidate after mayor Ken Latour had put out the call.
It appears Latour made a small mistake and he explained what happened.
“I put out a call for names among the councilors by e-mail and I got one submission back,” he said. “Prior to that, another councilor had sent me something and I had overlooked that.”
That other councillor was Bernard Dueck and that meant the original motion of installing Cassidy as deputy mayor had to be defeated, which was done this past Monday at the regular council meeting.
Latour said they will now have to put the matter to a vote.
“According to the procedures set out in our by-laws, we need to have a vote,” he said. “Council needs to vote when there’s more than one name, so those two names will be on the agenda for our next meeting.”
That meeting will take place on April 10 during the committee of the whole.
