NewsYK loses Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - As of March 2013 Yellowknife will no longer have a Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre. But Yellowknife Company's commanding officer, Conrad Schubert, said this won't stop the company from recruiting and enrolling army reservists in Yellowknife. "Recruiting being the actual process of meeting people and seeing whether they're interested in doing what we're doing. So we'll continue to do that regardless of whether there's a recruiting centre here in Yellowknife." Schubert said the difference will be that the paper work will be processed through Calgary instead of Yellowknife which may mean a longer turn-around time. "The recruiting group is looking at ways to sort of mitigate that as well, perhaps with visiting teams who will come up to help process paperwork and that sort of thing." In an emailed statement a Department of Defence spokesperson wrote that “the success of national recruiting efforts… has provided the opportunity to rationalize the Canadian Forces recruiting footprint by closing some recruiting detachment without significantly impacting overall Regular Force recruiting.” This comes after the department has its own funding cut in the federal budget by $1.1 billion over the next three years.
