Hub mayor preparing for spring break-up

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - It may be a bit too soon to think about the break-up in Hay River, but it's on the mind of mayor Ken Latour.

The West Channel and Vale Island always seem to fall victim to either flooding or too much turbidity in the water source each year, but things are shifting toward the East Channel now and the town is getting ready.

Latour said they will be looking at measures to help ease the problems and one of those is to go after the pressure ridge at the mouth of both channels, which is really high this year, with the help of a local contractor.

"We're looking to clear about a 400 meter gap on the pressure ridge that is just outside of the East Channel and about 300 meter gap on the pressure ridge that is just outside of the West Channel," he said.

Latour said that's important because water during the break-up hits that ridge and comes back down.

"It's just like the rim of a bathtub it'll hit that, it'll stop and it'll come back up the channel. We want to avoid that situation and make sure that it has a way to get out into the lake, " he said.

Latour said there is an evacuation plan in place if they need to move residents out of the area.
