Holocaust survivor speaks in Yellowknife for the first time

Friday, April 20, 2012 - 8:52 AM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Holocaust survivor Ben Lesser was in Yellowknife yesterday sharing his story.

The 83 year old Lesser was the first holocaust survivor to ever speak in the Northwest Territories.

He made two presentations, speaking to students and the public at St Patrick's High School.

Lesser said students today should know what happened during the holocaust simply because there is a very important message to learn from it.

"The Nazis did not start by killing,” he said. “It all started with hate and young kids now days especially they tend to bully each other in school and things like that. That's how it gets started. You never know who the person you’re bullying at this moment could grow up to be, but you create an enemy."

Lesser said his message is a universal one: that people should respect each other and stop the hatred once and for all.
