Yellowknife - A long term fund raising campaign by YK1 students came to fruition this spring as 20 Yellowknifers traveled to Kenya to see the grand opening of the six new classrooms their donations helped build.

However, the trip only inspired them to do more to help the Simotwet Primary School.

Sir John Franklin teacher Dean McInnis said they are now looking at helping the Kenyan school build a facility where they can have a lunch program.

"We certainly formed a bond, a connection, with, you know, the principals there, the teachers, the kids. We got a chance to be at the school and play with the kids."

YK1 was connected with the school through an organization called A Better World.

McInnis said they encourage donors to see the projects their donations helped build.

"And I know we've done lots of fundraising with some great organizations, but when you go to see the results of it, actually right there, it was amazing. And it's something kids will never forget. And making it real, seeing what that money turned into, it's something the kids will never forget and they'll tell everybody about it."

YK1 students raised $21,000 for the school which was matched by an Alberta couple.
