Final cost of Hay River fire hall established

Friday, May 18, 2012 - 8:23 AM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - After months of back and forth regarding the cost of the Hay River Fire Hall project, it seems the finish line is in sight.

A special council meeting was held earlier this week to go over the final report on what the hall will look like and most importantly, how much it will cost.

The final number is pegged at $5.64 million, which was the original low bid put forth by Arctic Canada Construction, the project's contractor.

Mayor Ken Latour said cost savings were looked at by the contractor and the designer, Stantec Canada, but it wouldn't make that much of an impact in the end.

"I didn't make any sense to us to basically be cutting things when we weren't going to see the full value of the savings on anything that we would have cut," he said.

The final design contains no new changes to the design of the hall, but Latour said the source of heat is different now.

"Earlier it was proposed to use an electric heat and we’re looking at shifting over to something that can be fueled by propane, more than likely propane," he said.

Latour added councillors now want to move ahead and begin building the new hall.
