YK RCMP investigating float plane hit with bullet

Monday, May 28, 2012 - 3:51 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Yellowknife RCMP say a float plane was hit by a bullet on Sunday while in flight over the southeast side of Latham Island.

According to police, the pilot was able to land safely and the plane suffered only minor damages to the propeller and engine bonnet.

Constable Amanda McGillivray said they are still investigating the cause of the incident.

"I would like to think that it's not an intentional act because a person's life is in that person's hands then, but I think their investigation is continuing, but I'm not sure."

The president of the NWT Floatplane Association, Hal Logsdon, said that any bullet fired into the air has the potential to cause damage.

"It could be catastrophic. I mean, it could potentially bring the airplane down or could potentially penetrate the cockpit and injure or kill the pilot."

Police are now reminding people to be careful when using firearms and not to aim at passing planes in the sky.
