14-year-old male sought after YK sexual assault

Friday, June 1, 2012 - 4:48 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Yellowknife RCMP say a woman was sexually assaulted on 52nd Street at around 9:00pm Thursday night.

They were alerted to the situation by a member of the public and when they arrived, the 44-year-old victim was found sitting by herself.

Police believe two teenage boys are responsible for the attack.

They have already arrested a 15-year-old boy in relation to the case and he is now facing sexual assault charges.

The RCMP are still searching for a second 14-year-old suspect.

Constable Kathy Law said the witness that called police did exactly what needed to be done.

"He called the police and the police were able to attend the scene immediately, so they were able to take care of the victim and find one of the perpetrators very quickly, just very close to the scene."

Law said this kind of attack isn't something that occurs very often.

"So don't let things scare you into not enjoying the beautiful city that we live in, but ensure that you do it in a safe way."

Law said people should be aware of what is going around them and to try and be with other people when they are out walking.
