Ndilo chief and a former band councillor ask federal government for action on band council

Monday, June 11, 2012 - 8:27 AM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The Chief of Ndilo and a former Yellowkives Dene band councillor have sent a letter to the federal government seeking action on the situation with their community's band council.

In the letter, Ted Tsetta and Nuni Sanspariel call for a third party manager to step in immediately to manage the day-to-day affairs of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, among other things.

Nuni Sanspariel resigned from his role as a band councillor last week. He said this letter was not an attempt to gain power.

“In the past I was embarrassed, I'm going to say that out openly now, to be a part of the Yellowknives Dene and now it's the same. There's a lot of people that have the same feelings. I ran to try to make change; make a different; to try and get some trust back into leadership, but that's all gone out the window," he said.

Sanspariel confirmed they've been in contact with the federal government since the letter was sent.

"I just know that it's gotten their attention and we're being looked at," he said.

This comes on the heels of a similar letter by another former councillor, also raising concerns about the YKDFN council.

In response to that letter, the YKDFN said the comments made bear little resemblance to the actual facts and are generally ill-informed.
