Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Canada turned 145 years old on Sunday and Yellowknifers hit the curbsides on Franklin Avenue to show off their patriotism.

G Division RCMP led the march, followed by several groups, such as the Yellowknife Rotary Club, the Yellowknives Dene First Nation and JTFN, who were out in full force on Sunday.

Mayor Gordon Van Tighem said the parade was noteworthy for a couple of reasons, which included the weather.

"We had the first overfly of the parade for a few years, and secondly because mother nature didn't cooperate totally. We got a little damp partway through."

Once the parade was over, it was off to the Somba K'e Civic Plaza for the continuation of the festivities, which included music, bake sales and other Canada-related activities.

Van Tighem said the turnout there was excellent, but he missed out on one fun event.

"It was full of people anticipating the many events there. The one I really wanted to see was the pizza eating contest, but I didn't get over to that side of the park."

Canada Day was also a celebration of the Queen's 60th anniversary as Canada's head of state.
