Hay River resident proposes idea to curb crime

Friday, May 11, 2012 - 3:47 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - One Hay River resident wants to bring Citizens On Patrol to the Hub.

The on-duty death of Constable Christopher Worden and numerous break and enters at her own business motivated Tracy Hill to want to start a community watch group in the town.

Hill described what kinds of duties citizens on patrol would take on.

"Patrolling the streets, and business areas, and parks, and hotels, and being on the lookout for suspicious activities. Being a proactive member of the community and assisting police is the number one duty of Citizens On Patrol."

Hill explained how she thinks the patrols could prevent the criminal activity Hay River has experienced in the past.

"I think it's just getting it out there and making people aware. You know, there's more eyes and ears out now on the streets."

Hill has a meeting with the Drug Free Zone Committee next week and she said that as long as the committee and town hall are okay with it, she should be able to start the patrol with a few volunteers.
