NewsAnnual anti-smoking campaign takes interactive twistWednesday, January 25, 2012 - 5:17 PM Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The annual "Smoke Screening" anti-smoking campaign is on again in the NWT, but there's a new twist this year. Students in grades 6 through 12 will have the chance to film and edit their own personal anti-tobacco messages under the "Get Reel" component. A cessation project coordinator with Stanton Hospital, Bronwyn Livingstone, said the new program allows students to take a more hands-on approach to getting the message against tobacco use out there. "This program basically is putting the camera into the hands of youths, instead of youths observing other people's interpretation of tobacco related issues, and gives them a voice on a sometimes very difficult subject to talk about." Because the world has become a lot more dependent on electronic messages, Livingstone said it just makes sense to have something like this. "Why not give kids the opportunity to not just talk about tobacco from an entertainment perspective, from a heart wrenching, thought provoking perspective, but to be the actual creators of a message that's more personal?" Students have until April to submit their completed ads, which will then be put on Facebook for people to vote on. The winner will be announced May 31st.
