NTPC trying to deal with YK power outage issues

Wednesday, September 19, 2012 - 4:50 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Power outages are a sad reality of living in Yellowknife, but the recent spate of outages in the city has caused a lot of grief.

The NWT Power Corporation held a press conference Wednesday morning to outline its plans to make sure the outages become few and far between for the future.

NTPC president and CEO Emanuel DaRosa said one thing they are doing is putting out extra crews along the Bluefish line to check how things are running.

"We have sent crews to patrol the entire Bluefish line from end to end. So 31 kilometers of walking through the forest there are lakes to get around, so this is no easy task, that should be completed by the end of this week."

He also said part of the problem with outages deals with the Yellowknife grid itself not being part of a network as it is in the south and that's a disadvantage right there.

"We are isolated systems we are not tide into the continental grid like other utilities. Which means responding to the loss of generation is far more difficult for the NTPC then other utilities. But, none the less we will strive to do better."

DaRosa said to date; there have been 16 NTPC-related outages in Yellowknife over the past 12 months.
