Yellowknife Man Sentenced For Spring Grocery Store Assault

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 - 4:10 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The trial of 28-year-old Jacob Griep has ended after two days in court.

Griep was found guilty of aggravated assault, breach of probation, and theft after attempting to steal meat from Yellowknife's downtown Extra Foods in April.

During the incident 63-year-old Mary Cleary was thrown to the ground by Griep as he fled, causing her to suffer a broken orbital bone, fractured wrist, and cracked ribs.

Griep claimed he was drunk after consuming vodka, whiskey and hand sanitizer...which caused him to blackout and not recall the assault.

Justice Christine Gagnon did not see that, among other factors, as good enough reasons to find him not guilty of any of the charges against him.

Gagnon sentenced Griep to 36 months in prison with 177 days being deducted for time served.

It is not known yet where he will serve his time.
