YK Centre MLA Robert Hawkins Wants Stand-Alone Aurora Campus

Tuesday, October 30, 2012 - 6:33 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. -According to the minister of Education, Culture, and Employment, the lack of money available in the budget for territorial infrastructure means a stand-alone campus for Aurora College is unlikely anytime soon.

The Yellowknife campus currently runs out of Northern United Place, and Jackson Lafferty said that lease has been extended for at least another three years.

He said the 75 million dollars they have budgeted can only go so far.

"We talk about the new hospital, we talk about renovations to the hospital over a stand-alone campus, and some of those areas we have been working towards are critical needs as well.”

But Yellowknife Centre MLA Robert Hawkins wanted to see some progress on a stand-alone campus, and he said it hasn't been there.

"When I asked back on May 31st 2012 about actually laying a plan before the house giving us some clear definitions of the partners and the timeline, he wrote me a letter back that I table at the house two weeks ago and it showed nothing, other than that they are continuing the lease"

Lafferty insisted he does want a stand-alone campus for Aurora College, but said it's a balancing act with the limited budget.
