Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Changes are coming to the Centre for Northern Families and perhaps the biggest change is at the top.

Executive director Arlene Hache has made the decision to leave her post after 20 years and is in the process of transitioning to a new executive director right now.

Hache said the centre is in the perfect position to transition to a new leader and she now wants to focus on projects which deal with human rights issues.

"Not running a centre will give me more opportunity to delve in to specific kinds of stories that I want to explore, or really have people understand about particular women in the North."

One thing Hache is proud of is how the centre and the Yellowknife Women's Society have helped to bring about change when it comes to women's issues in the North.

"An agency that really has brought issues that are important to Northerners to the forefront. So just the reality of that level of work over 20 years, there's something to be said for that."

Carolyn Johnson, who was born in Yellowknife, will take over from Hache in the coming weeks.
