Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The spring melt in the Yellowknife area caused a small problem in Baker Creek late last week.

Inspectors from the Giant Mine Remediation Project Team found a small run-off of total suspended sediment into the creek on May 3rd.

The acting manager of the remediation project, Adrian Paradis, said water went over land, picked up some dirt and went into one of the ditches.

Paradis said work on cleaning things up began as soon as it was detected.

"We had people out on site by 2:30, 3 o'clock starting to divert and pump and try and get the water to make sure it was clean."

By 10 p.m., the water began to look clearer than it did earlier and by Sunday, Paradis said the testing done on the water was showing what's known as non-detect.

"That means, from a laboratory standpoint our samples were going in and they were below three milligrams per litre, and they could not detect any total suspended solids in the samples."

Paradis said several groups were contacted about the situation, including the YK Dene First Nation, Department of Fisheries and Oceans and the City of Yellowknife.
