Alberta reservists return to Yellowknife to help widen walkway

Wednesday, May 16, 2012 - 1:41 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - A group of reservists from Alberta is lending a helping hand to the city.

The 41 Combat Engineers Regiment, made up of members from Edmonton and Calgary, is assisting city employees in widening the Niven Elevated Walkway so snow removal equipment can be taken across it.

This is the second time the regiment has helped out with a project in the city; they also helped with an expansion of the Frame Lake walkway in 2010.

Troop commander Lieutenant Steve Neal said his crew has been hard at work since May 14.

"There's lots of cutting of wood, hammering, putting in screws [and] doing and undoing bolts. That's sort of been occupying us for the last couple of days," he said.

Mayor Gord Van Tighem said the helping hand is a gift of thanks from the regiment for the ability to visit and the hospitality.

"We usually have the materials and they have the engineering skills and the labour skills and all of a sudden there is something that you can get your bobcat across," said Van Tighem.

Neal said the crew is expected to be finished today and will be on its way home tomorrow.
