Thursday, May 24, 2012 - 5:15 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - NWT Finance Minister Michael Miltenberger laid out the 2012/2013 territorial budget on Thursday afternoon and there were a number of funding increases and cuts.

Some departments will see decreases in funding this year, including the Department of Health and Social Services going down by $10 million, with 9.6 million of that being sunset funding, which is money not being renewed.

The Department of Industry Tourism and Investment will see a reduction of $4.4 million, and most of that is sunset funding of energy programs.

The Department of Justice has an increase of roughly $5 million dollars, Transportation is up $9 million thanks to the Deh Cho Bridge, and Finance also sees a slight increase.

Miltenberger said the government will continue to spend, although they will step back in the next couple of budget to help replenish the coffers and replenish the cash reserves.

Miltenberger described it as a budget that will restore fiscal balance while protecting programs and services.
