Erasmus considers running for AFN Chief

Monday, May 28, 2012 - 1:37 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - After several years of being Dene National Chief, Bill Erasmus is considering a larger role.

He's picked up the nomination forms for election as chief of the Assembly of First Nations, which means a lot of canvassing as he needs a certain amount of support from other chiefs around the country.

Erasmus has not yet officially announced his intention to run, but he said there has been support from around the country for him to run as an alternative voice.

"People are very concerned with the way the Assembly of First Nations is run as an organization. They are very concerned that people are not being represented on a whole range of issues. For example, when the premiers meet first nations issues need to be addressed," Erasmus said.

He said no matter what the issue is, they affect all First Nations people, regardless of where they live and they need to be a part of the discussion.

If he runs, he'll be up against current AFN chief Shawn Atleo, who has already indicated his intention to seek another term.
