Yk councilor questions city on media policy

Friday, June 29, 2012 - 3:49 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - One city councilor is curious about what the city's policy is when it comes to communicating with the media.

Paul Falvo mentioned some concerns from local media sources about how members of the city's staff aren't able to speak to reporters about certain issues.

Falvo said reporters are being told staff can't talk because they need authorization and he wanted clarification on just what the policy is.

"When there are media requests, who is authorized or allowed to speak to members of the media concerning things that we do, concerning the city?"

Mayor Gordon Van Tighem made it clear who does most of the speaking.

"I'm the primary responder and in the case that there's a requirement for expertise, the appropriate person in the appropriate department is referred to that person.

His Worship said the media policy at City Hall is the same as any other public organization when it comes to communications with the media - everything must be approved beforehand.
