YK businesses express opinions during Minister's visit

Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 1:37 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Members from different work sectors in the NWT were at a round table discussion with Canada's Minister of National Revenue, Gail Shea, on Tuesday in Yellowknife.

The roundtable was to announce the extension of the Mineral Exploration Tax Credit, and also to give Shea a chance to hear from the table members.

Andy Wong of MacKay and Partners Accounting said the discussion among the group was great for the minister to hear.

"It's encouraging. I hope this is the new outreach the [Canada Revenue Agency] has with our Northern economy, our Northern taxpayers. And I certainly hope for more meetings in the future, whether it's with Minister Shea herself or her representatives."

Wong said it was great to see the government actually coming to the North to hear the problems businesses deal with first hand.

"I think it's great. I think the minister really did get an earful in terms of constructive suggestions. She was quite sincere in wanting to make a difference. And certainly we did provide her with very specific suggestions of what she can take away and what she can work on."

The roundtable also included the president of the NWT Chamber of Commerce Hughie Graham, and the director of the NWT Construction Association, Jack Rowe, among others.
