NWT Chamber of Commerce to give two scholarships to business students

Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 5:35 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, the NWT Chamber of Commerce is going to be giving out two scholarship grants this year instead of just one.

Sponsors, presenters, and AGM attendees donated enough to the Chamber that they'll be giving out one scholarship worth $2500 and another worth $1000.

NWT Chamber president Hughie Graham said they have several criteria when it comes to awarding the scholarship.

“We look at grades; there is a requirement of two letters of reference from non-families members, school transcripts and the acceptance letter. And then always the biggest thing for me being a part of the scholarship committee is the cover letter that explains the enrolment and then personal career goals."

The recipients must be going into a post-secondary business program and Graham said they would like them to return to the North after school, although it's not a requirement.

"You don’t get uptake 100% of the time, I’ve known students who have left the North and just paid off their loans. However I would have to think that the return rate is pretty high."

The deadline for applications is August 7th and the winner will be chosen on August 20th.
