Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The 2012 edition of Operation Nunalivut has wrapped up in Resolute Bay.

Nunavut's commissioner, Edna Elias, was the guest of honour at the closing ceremony on Wednesday, which ended the operation's two week mission.

Lt. Col. Glen McNeil of Joint Task Force North was the task force commander for the operation and he said everything was successful to varying degrees.

“Overall, we proved that we’ve got the capabilities and we’ve demonstrated those capabilities to rapidly deploy to the high Arctic and be able to operate there for a sustained period of time,” he said.

The 1 Canadian Ranger Patrol Group was a big part of the operation and McNeil said their work focused primarily on grid searches and air patrols using communications on the ground.

“In some cases, it was the Rangers in the patrols that could do this, or they would do it through their headquarters, that discussion,” he said. “There was that co-ordinated effort, so I was really happy to see that they could do this on the ground.”

The operation also saw divers from search and rescue teams located in Nova Scotia and British Columbia use remote operated vehicles to survey the HMS Breadalbane, the expedition ship which sank in 1853 while searching for Sir John Franklin.
