Swimmer attempting to cross North Arm of Great Slave Lake

Friday, August 17, 2012 - 4:47 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - If the weather holds up, and the wind stays manageable, Chrissy Taylor will attempt to swim across the North Arm of Great Slave Lake this weekend.

The 29-year-old originally from Hamilton, Ontario, will start on the west side of the bay and plans to finish up around 20 hours later near the West Mirage Islands.

She said the only thing that can stop her is the conditions.

"Being out in the middle of the North arm with big waves and it’s going to be dark there’s no moon out cause its new moon, its seems a little bit daunting I guess even to myself so that’s a concern for sure"

She said this year she's just doing it because no one has ever done it before, but added there is the possibility to expand it next year.

"there is talk of potentially myself coming back next year and then doing a crossing of the basin, and if that happens then we will defiantly make it into sort kind of fundraiser, I had been talking to Betty House originally"

Taylor is planned to leave Yellowknife around 6 pm Friday night, along with escorts Wayne Guy and Craig Hockridge, who will accompany her in boats.
