NewsDiavik closes winter road season, reports average haul
Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Diavik Diamond Mine has completed its winter road re-supply for 2012. In total, the mine trucked over 3000 loads equaling 89,000 tonnes worth of fuel, cement, explosives and other equipment to its mine location on East Island. According to the director of winter road operations for the Tibbitt-to-Contwoyto Winter Road, Ron Near, that's an average yearly haul for the mine. "They're one of the three joint venture partners so for Diavik that's been an average year over the last three or four years." Diavik's big project this year was the delivery of equipment for the new wind turbine farm, which is expected to be ready later this year. Near said some changes had to be made to the road in order to allow trucks to successfully transport the turbines and blades up to the mine site. "Removing some of the grades that were on the winter road to allow for the long pieces to successfully get up over portages without dragging on the ground." The winter road officially closed on Mar. 28th and was open for a total of 57 days this season. CJCD Mix 100 News More Local
