McLeod addresses violence against women at Halifax conference

Wednesday, May 2, 2012 - 4:13 PM

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - In his role as the Minister Responsible for Women, Premier Bob McLeod is in Halifax meeting with his counterparts from other provinces and territories.

The agenda included the situation of aboriginal women, violence against women and women's economic security

McLeod said one of the messages of the meetings has been that a variety of groups should be brought together to address family violence.

"You know, we have the Status of Women Council, we have non-government organizations, native women’s organizations. We have aboriginal governments, territorial governments, federal governments, community justice committees, schools, all want to work together to deal with common issues."

McLeod said they've also discussed the links between family violence and other things like workplace harassment and school bullying.

"It's one of the main messages we got [Wednesday] morning, all of these things are linked. You can't just speak about one small piece of it without dealing with the larger issues."

McLeod added violence against women is a very difficult issue.
