Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Stantec Architecture Ltd. is being recognized for its work on the Yellowknife Fieldhouse.

The company received the professional award of merit in engineering from the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists on Thursday night as the association honoured some of its own at an awards banquet.

The chair of the association's awards and honours committee Kevin McLeod explained why their work on the Fieldhouse was selected.

"It was just a great concept, it was build to high standards, it's a wonderful building to go into, we're very proud of it. And we recognize that it was a project that made a difference in society."

McLeod said Covello is well respected in the mining community.

"Not only in the North, but worldwide. His vision for infrastructure to support that industry has been fantastic. He's passionate, he's an advocate of geoscience, he's a tremendous mentor for the young geoscientists."

This year's award for environmental excellence went to the NWT Power Corporation and the department of Industry, Tourism and Investment for the Fort Simpson Solar Power Project.
