Funding sought for Somba K'e Park sculpture

Yellowknife, N.W.T - The Somba K'e Park sculpture looks nice, but the project's designer is looking for city council to help him finish the job.

Francois Thibeault spoke to councilors May 14 at city hall and asked for their help in completing what's been started and once it's finished, Thibeault figures it will have cost around $261,000.

Thibeault said he's raised around $140,000 in contributions and the city has pitched in with $22,000, but he's still short about $45,000, most of which is his wages for the work done, according to an invoice.

He said the city needs to step up and in return, he will do the same.

"If the city could pay its debt, as per our arrangement, I will continue to fundraise for the balance of the project under the same terms," said Thibeault.

Councilor Cory Vanthuyne said the best option would be to put into consideration for the 2013 budget because there is no way the cost can be looked at right now.

"I think there would have to be an understanding and some time allotted to allow for this matter to be run through deliberations so that we can hopefully come to a resolution," said Vanthuyne.

Several businesses in the city have already donated cash and in-kind gifts to the project.
