Hay River Artisans to co-host moosehide tanning session in the Hub

Yellowknife, N.W.T. – The Hay River Artisans and the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment are organizing a moosehide tanning workshop in the hopes of passing the skill onto some new people.

The practice is not as common as it once was and the artisans group wanted an opportunity for more people to learn.

Instructor Kathy Mouse said it was her mother taught her to tan moosehide when she was younger.

“She wanted me to pass it on and now I want to pass it on so other people can learn,” she said. “I get my daughter to work with me and now she’s going to be tanning her own hide.”

Mouse is hoping there will be more opportunities for her to teach the craft in the future.

Organizer Franzika Ulbricht plans to take the workshop herself and she said there isn't a large supply of traditionally-tanned moosehide.

“People are really eager to learn the skill, to be able to produce that to fill a gap or even use leather for their own crafts,” she said.

Since tanning is a fairly intensive process, the workshop will run daily for two weeks beginning May 21.
