Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The NWT does not fare very well on a recent comparative analysis of animal protection laws across Canada done by the Animal Legal Defense Fund.

The NWT placed 11th out of 13 when it comes to animal protection laws, ahead of only Quebec and Nunavut.

The acting deputy director of the department of Municipal and Community Affairs, Ian Legaree, said they're aware of it, but there are some discrepancies to note.

"We basically took note of the report. I mean, the NWT Dog Act only deals with dogs. This report covers all animal welfare legislation in Canada, so there's a little bit of apples and oranges there."

The GNWT made changes to the Dog Act in 2011, and Legaree said they'll use this new information going forward if they decide any more changes need to be made.

He said the North faces more challenges than other regions when it comes to protecting animals.

"We still have with problems to dogs in some of our smaller communities. So when the changes to the Dog Act were brought forward we were trying to deal with those, in addition to protecting dogs from cruel treatment."

Manitoba took the number one spot on the ALDF's list, followed by BC and Ontario.

The Yukon hit the middle of the pack in seventh.
