Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Bikers carrying childrens toys might seem like a unconventional mix but this past weekend was the exception as Hay River hosted its 10th annual Toy Run.
Riders from all over Hay River and Yellowknife travelled to Enterprise and back and it was followed by a community barbecue, auction and biker bash.
The head organizer of the run, Lionel Gagnier, said that they had a strong turnout over the long weekend.
“We had just under 30 motorcycles,” he said. “Not as many as we’ve had in past years, but we still had a good turnout. When the weekend was done, we raised $1,740, which will be donated to the Hay River Secret Santa (program).”
Gagnier also said the auction, which is hosted by one of the riders, has become a major event with lots of different items up for grabs.
“From riding gear to artwork to clothing, all stuff that is donated by either individuals or by businesses in either Yellowknife or Hay River,” he said.
The riders who took part in the Military Police National Motorcycle Relay from Yellowknife also joined in to help out with the proceedings.
He added riders on average arrived with one or two toys and by the end of the weekend, they had collected two large boxes full of toys.
